Does undergraduate study prepare you for the design office?

After 50 years of testing and training graduates, the recent exchange in the Verulam column of ‘The Structural Engineer’ is as inconclusive as usual.

It is time to step back and ask: ‘is undergraduate study intended as a preparation for the computer dominated design office? What are the skills required?

David M Brohn MBE is a Structural Engineer who specialises in teaching the fundamentals of structural analysis and structural behaviour.

David’s career spans over forty years. One of David’s most prominent works is his 1984 book ‘Understanding Structural Analysis’, which accompanies a variety of structural engineering courses, explaining how an understanding of structural behaviour can be used to develop conventional theories of analysis.
