Dear Dr. Brohn,
I hope this message finds you well. I felt compelled to reach out to share my profound appreciation for the transformative impact your book, “Understanding Structural Analysis,” has had on my life and career.
Allow me to share a bit about my journey. I completed my M. Tech in Structural Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1972, and have since had a rewarding career as a structural design engineer. In 1987, I stumbled upon your book at the British Council Library in New Delhi. The first chapter on qualitative analysis of Frames was a revelation. Despite my background in the Finite Element Method and my familiarity with matrix methods and the code number approach, I realised I had been missing a crucial piece of the puzzle: the ability to interpret results meaningfully. This realisation, sparked by your book, changed everything for me.
From that point on, each design assignment began with a qualitative analysis of the structure, and I approached my work with newfound clarity and insight. This shift enabled me to design complex structures, including high-rise towers, hotels, hospitals, stadiums and industrial structures across the globe—from Dubai and Bahrain to Singapore, Jakarta, Bangladesh, Nepal, and various regions in India. In 1992, I founded Optimal Designs, which has since evolved into Optimal Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd, with offices in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Although I sold my significant stake in the company to a Houston-based group called CBM, I continue to serve as Chairman Emeritus in an advisory capacity at the age of seventy-six.
As I reflect on my career, I realise that my success in designing complex structures would not have been possible without the lessons I learned from your book. For this, I extend to you my deepest and sincerest gratitude.
Thank you once again for your invaluable and significant contribution to our field.
Warm regards,
Abhay |
